Next Door is an annual temporary public art exhibition on display throughout the Skeleton Park neighbourhood. The exhibition showcases the work of Katarokwi/Kingston-based artists, displayed in public parks, on front lawns, doors, windows, and trees throughout the neighbourhood.

Next Door was conceived in spring of 2020 in response to the seismic changes experienced by all as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, allowing an opportunity for community building through the showcasing of work by our “next-door neighbour” artists, and providing a safe activity for locals to engage with during periods of isolation. This initial iteration of the project was co-presented with Union Gallery.

Skeleton Park Arts Festival continued the project solo in 2021, opening up the exhibition opportunity to artists across Katarokwi/Kingston. Sixteen eclectic installations, from painting and sculpture to performance art and augmented reality, were exhibited by over twenty-six artists in this second rendition of Next Door.  The breadth of topics explored in Next Door 2021 offered a series of snapshots into the lives of artists working through a global pandemic, finding time to create, reflect, and simply be.
