#MyDoorYGK

Calling all creatives!

In response to Next Door, the Union Gallery and Skeleton Park Arts Festival invite all community members within and beyond the Skeleton Park neighbourhood to create a work of art in front of their homes for a city-wide community art initiative #MyDoorYGK

At the onset of the pandemic, many talented creatives began to display artworks from their residence—on front doors, from windows, across balconies, porches and lawns—motivating the project Next Door. Art became an even more powerful way to connect, inspire and bring hope during a moment when we were all so suddenly disconnected from one another—and to engage with art in an open space, at a safe distance and at one’s own pace.

All members of the community are encouraged to participate in this collective action by creating a work of art and displaying it to the public from their residence. #MyDoorYGK is about expressing creativity and responding to Next Door artist projects—artworks can take any form you wish, using whatever materials are available to you!

We want to share your creations and extend the footprint of temporary public art across Katarokwi/Kingston. Tag the Union Gallery and Skeleton Park Arts Festival on whatever platform you are using (social media handles listed below) and include the hashtag #MyDoorYGK or send us a photo of your artwork via DM or to ugallery@queensu.ca

A few guidelines to follow: practice social distancing and follow all municipal mandates in place at the time of creation and display of your artwork; avoid creating enclosed spaces or work that promotes physical contact; present artworks that are viewable from the street or sidewalk; no hate speech or derogatory images; artwork created remains the property of the creator, and they are solely responsible for the artwork; use materials that are non-hazardous; do not disrupt sidewalks, public spaces or other’s property without permission.
